History

Nominated Theodore Roosevelt in 1912, it was another name for the Progressive Party. Disbanded in 1920. Roosevelt lost the Republican Party nomination to Taft but was “fit as a bull moose” to lead the country.

MERITS

Historically interesting on several levels. Could be brought back simply to remind the left that the first Progressive Party actually branched off from the Republicans.

DRAWBACKS

The word “bull” is subject to ridicule today. Probably best not to include it in a party name.

HISTORY

While there has been no American Bridge Party, the Bridge Party of Canada (2015-2017) was a non-partisan party built on issues, rather than candidates. It is best known for its advocacy of a twenty hour work week and release from any regard to GDP.

MERITS

The name itself suggests positioning in the center, where a majority likely rests. It also suggests a pragmatic approach to politics, with a commitment to bipartisanship.

DRAWBACKS

It is hard to be passionate about the center and it is hard to define which issues are to be bridged, or how.

HISTORY

An act rather than a political party, colonists rejected taxation without representation by demonstrating against the British East India Trading Company, throwing boxes of tea overboard as a protest against the Tea Act in 1775. It was a pivotal event leading up to the Revolutionary War.

MERITS

The historic reference could work for a group seeking radical release from taxation without representation. It might also work as a protest by those who believe elections have been stolen and representation has been lost.

DRAWBACKS

The reference to Boston is too localized. The Tea Party movement is associated with the Republican Party and Libertarianism.
